Kate Thorn and Karlie Swanson of Urunga Primary School recently competed in the NSW Primary School Athletics Championships at the Sydney Olympic Athletics Stadium at Homebush.

Kate won the 8yrs girls 100m at school, district, zone and regional levels to progress to the State Level Championships. 45 girls then had to battle it out over heats and semi finals to progress to the final.

Kate ran a personal best time to finish 9th in her semi final, you could have thrown a blanket over all the 9 runners they were that close together at the finish line.

Kate placed 17th overall from the 45 fastest runners in the State.

This was Kate’s first experience of State level carnivals.

Karlie won the 11yrs girls 800m at school, district and zone carnivals before placing 3rd at the regional titles and progressing the State Championships. Karlie finished a fantastic 6th in her heat. Karlie has competed at State level for a few years now.

The parents of both children would like to thank a local organisation Go Bello Go and their co-ordinator Natalie Cook for donating funds to the children to help compensate the expenses involved in progressing the elite levels of competition.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
