Urunga hit its ‘purple patch’ during the weekend when the seaside community hosted this year’s Bellingen Shire Relay for Life.
Hundreds of cancer survivors, carers and supporters from throughout the shire - dressed in the event’s traditional colours of mauve and white - spent much of their weekend walking around the town’s soccer oval. in their bid to raise much needed funds for support, education and research into the disease.
An impressive 31 teams (more than 390 people) raised more than $37,000 during the 21 hour event.
Co-organiser Tracy Neaves was delighted with the outcome.
“I was blown away by the incredible support of the community for getting behind and making this event such a great success,” Mrs Neaves said.
“On behalf of the committee we would like to thank all of the participants for their dedication and achievements over the weekend and to the Bellingen Shire community in their support of all the teams in their fundraising efforts.”
The event kicked off with a ‘welcome to country’ from local Aboriginal elder, Tom Kelly.
Kim Pearce from the NSW Cancer Council office reminded walkers that Relay for Life was an opportunity for members of the community to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate with those who have survived.
“Relay is about believing,” Ms Pearce said, “believing that we can defeat cancer.”
She said the Cancer Council believed it could defeat cancer in this lifetime through research, and offered valuable assistance with support and information and advocacy.
“We intend to make sure child care centres and schools are sun safe and we’re encouraging everyone to be aware of the changes in their skin that could be signs of cancer.”
Ms Pearce also announced that the Cancer Council had donated large portable sun shade marquees, valued at more than $3000, to the Bellingen Shire.
These were available free of charge for community groups.
Throughout the event relay walkers and their supporters were entertained by an impressive showcase of local singers, dancers, choirs and bands.
The Urunga SES and Bellingen Lions clubs provided the sausage sizzle and breakfast, with assistance from a mobile catering and coffee van.
All proceeds were donated back to the event.
Throughout the two days teams continued to raise additional funds through the sale of crafts, cakes, slices, plants, and books.
Three brave Urunga residents - Wayne Sharkey, Julia Pengilly and Kim Post - put their hair on the line, pledging their locks to the shears if they raised more than $250.
It was too easy, a freshly shorn Wayne Sharkey claimed.
Apples, donated by Brisbane markets based fruit and veggie vendor IPP, and bananas from Golden Dawn, Coffs Harbour were given out to foot weary walkers during the day, while Dairy Farmers and Five Star Supermarket donated the healthy breakfast Sunday morning.
Prime Possum and Patty Platypus visited the site to lend a hand and to keep the children entertained, while Sammy Seagull and a healthy ‘looking’ carrot helped promote sun-safe healthy eating message.
Major sponsors were the Bellingen Shire Courier Sun, Foodworks Supermarket, Prime TV and Country Energy., while Urunga Pharmacy supported the entertaining Mr Relay.
