Council stairway replaced

22/07/2008 10:47:00 AM
Stairs to the offices of Mayor Mark Troy, General Manager, Mike Colreavy and 20 other staff have been replaced at no cost to council.

The Courier-Sun was told the stairs had to be replaced because they were “illegal”, however General Manager, Mike Colreavy says this is not correct.

“Although the original set of stairs complied with the building standard, they did not meet the architect's specification and the builder was required to replace them at no cost to Council,” he said.

The stairs and disabled lift service the offices of the General Manager and the Mayor, as well as 20 people in the Corporate Services Department.

Mr Colreavy said the project was expected to be completed in time for the official opening of the new library on Saturday, August 16, although there might be some minor finishing work continuing beyond that date.

“The cost estimate for the project remains at $2,000,000 excluding GST, as originally budgeted,” he said.

“This allows for variations to the original building contract of $191,000 excluding GST. The estimate also includes provision for costs which are not part of the contract with the builder -architects fees, developer contributions, relocation of power, photovoltaic installation, boundary adjustment costs, library furniture and fitout, and removal costs.”
